Host name in vSphere Web Client

Hi there,

Need help with a minor irritation we have with our vSphere cluster.

We have recently upgraded all of our hardware and installed a new cluster at work.

I have added all of our hosts into the cluster under vSphere Web Console but when I added them I added them via their ip address.

I have since created dns entries for each host and have FQDN for them.

What I want to know is is there a way of changing in the web console how the hosts are referenced and listed from their ip address to their FQDN.

Each host is part of a distributed v switch.

Many thanks,

Pete

How to remove old entries on datastore in vcentre?

$

HI,

Please go easy on me, I have had no training on vcentre or virtualization and the guy who did has left, so I'm on my own and new to all this.

So we had an issue where the SAN became full and stopped me from booting a virtual machine. So I looked on the vcentre and under the storage cluster it said there was a virtual machine template that was taking up 150gig. So I converted it to a Virtual Machine, used the migrate to move it to another cluster and another SAN. I then converted it back to the template. That all seems good. However when I go to the original SAN it still appears there, although it does say space used is 0 of 150gig and on the other data store it appears 150gb of 150gb. So it looks like it has moved fine, but I want to get rid of the entry on the old datastore as it will get confusing in the long run. My previous colleague also moved some virtual servers and looking at it they also have these entries. I did try removing it from the inventory on the old datastore but it removed it on both. I'm obviously missing something. so is it possible to remove the old entry on the old datastore and if so how do I do it?

I've had a prod around the internet but I cant see anything relevant. Any help would be great.

Thanks

M

USB Hdd Keeps Disappearing From Host

Good Morning,

We have a host running ESXi5 which a USB hard drive attached which is being used to back up one of the Guest OS's.

Under settings we have added the USB Device which is a Western Digital 1TB Hdd.

It works for a few days and then the guest cannot see it.

Going into the VM settings its not there and when clicking on add it isn't listed as an option.

Rebooting the entire host resolves the problem but this is of course impractical and annoying.

Has anyone else had this and is there a fix?

Thanks

Andy

Hi,

Thanks a lot fot your support.

Just one more question.

If I would like to buy a full version and try to install it over an existing Fusin 4.1.3 I do not know if i will loose my existing data / VM.

Unfortunataly I have virtualized a Windows notebook on a vm on my macbook, because there is a database on it, where i can not delete.

I have same issue . We have 1 cluster of 2 esxi 4.1 host.

After upgrade 1 of the host to esxi 5.5 via update manager , the vmotion doesn't work.

vmkping request time out .

Manage to resolve the issue by disable and enable back the vmotion .

Hi,

i have a hittle problem by managing my resourcepools. My vCenter has two cluster with the same resourcepool-names. I would like to adjust the share values of these ressourcepool. With get-Cluster and get-resourcepool could i collect the data. But if i would change the share values i could not specify the cluster so they would be change both resourcepools. Is there any solution to specify the Cluster?

Bkf files are very important while you creating backup for your data .However if you get fail creating bkf files or bkf files get damaged, you no need to worry in this case as you just have to follow a method given by Kernel for BKF recovery tool. Tool is very easy to use and very safe option to repair bkf files .It handles all corruption and error situations .visit

VMFS 5 compatibility

Hi,

I'm trying unsuccessfully to find an up to date VMFS compatibility table, I've looked at the compatibility matrix but can't find anything specific. What I need to confirm is whether VMFS datastores created on ESXi hosts 5.5 are compatible with 5.0 hosts? I would have thought they were but need to know definitively as it's part of a project plan I'm working on.

Thanks

Il Port Mirror è disponibile solo sugli switch distribuiti della versione Enterprise Plus, gli switch standard non hanno il concetto di porte assegnate.

Hi all,

I didn't find any info in the network about my questions and i decide to ask you. So here is my question:

     1. How to passthrough pci device using command (I can do it by edit /etc/vmware/esx.conf but I think there may be a better way) ?

2.How can I to add pci device that I already passthrough from the host to the vm machine that I want, again by using a command ?

I using ESXi 5.5, if i missing something please tell me

Thanks in advance and will be waiting for answers

Hi,

With PowerCLI 5.8 Release 1 this property field .ExtensionData.Summery.RunTime.BootTime is still empty with some VM's. So this bug hasn't been solved yet?

Kind regards,

My favorite in all this is what they have done for ESXi 6.

They have finally listened to us and gave a desktop client. Wait till you see it.

The a**holes simply wrapped IE in a desktop shell and are now calling this a desktop client. If this isn't the true definition of adding insults to injuries, I am not sure what else is.

Yes folks, we will soon have the pleasure of installing a useless desktop application that wraps a browser for us. Basically, we are too incompetent to open up a browser and type in the url to web client.

Hello Rivers_X,

You are welcome.

The program (Fusion) and the data (your VMs) are separate and updating/replacing the program does not touch your data.

You will not loose your data, the VMs are not touched by the uninstall/install or update.

Having said that, it is always a good idea to make a copy of your important data to an external disk on regular times.

There are also other things - like a disk malfunctioning - that can lead to data loss.

Please note that Time Machine is not a reliable way to backup virtual machines.

For a more detailed answer on the why/how let me refer you to this elaborate answer from WoodyZ

Afaik this is not a PowerCLI bug (remember the ExtensionData maps to a read-only copy of the actual vSphere object).

This is an ESXi issue in my opinion.
